Warhammer Fantasy Battle is a long-time favourite amongst the miniature war games. The game was first published in 1983 by Games Workshop and it has been around since. The game has several relatives and spin-offs, including the very popular science fiction war game Warhammer 40,000 and the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying Game.

Warhammer Fantasy Battle is set in a fantasy world that is a cross-breed of Tolkien's Middle-Earth with Renaissance Germany. In the game two players wage war with their armies of knights, elves, dwarves, orcs, goblins, lizardmen, skaven (giant human-like rats), undead, and many others. The majority of the 28mm scale miniatures depict single foot soldiers or cavalrymen, but players can also have large monsters and war machines in their armies.

Armies are built with a point system so the different forces are balanced. The troops are moved with rulers and battle is waged by throwing plenty of six-sided dice according to the skills of the units. There are heroes and magic, too, to spice up the battles.

Of course, the game is immensely collectible and a new player must invest a hefty sum of money to get started. Buying a complete army is an easy way to get into the game, but it can be expensive.
