Warhammer 40,000 or 40K from Games Workshop is one of the most popular miniature games. The game has been around since 1987 and is still doing strong. In the game two players field their armies against each other. The armies can be built from a wide array of miniatures, divided in different races: armor-clad Space Marines, elf-like Elders, alien Tyranids, Orks, Imperial Guard and many others. Army-building is based on a point system to balance the different forces.

The game is played with 28mm scale miniatures. Miniatures usually feature individual soldiers, but also vehicles and larger creatures. Armies can vary from small to large, depending on how much money the players have invested in their collections. According to Wikipedia, a new player should prepare to spend at least £100 to buy a useful army.

The grim futuristic science fiction setting of the game has been used in other games. There are several PC versions, other miniatures games (for example Epic, which uses smaller scale and larger armies, and Necromunda, which features small skirmishes between lightly armed forces) and board games like Space Hulk. 40K itself originates from the fantasy-themed Warhammer Fantasy Battle.

There's plenty to collect in the world of Warhammer. From eBay you can find just about anything, from individual miniatures to complete armies. Buying a ready army is a good way to start the game, though ready-painted armies can be pretty expensive as their previous owners have usually spent hours and hours painting the figures.
