Many mahjong players want vintage sets: bakelite sets are popular, as are other old-fashioned mahjong sets. Fortunately eBay is an excellent source for old mahjong sets - after all, mahjong sets were imported in vast quantities from 1920s and are often quite durable, so there are plenty of old sets still around.

As with all mahjong sets, keep in mind what you want, if you're looking for a set for playing the game. If you play the American game, buy an American set with at least 152 tiles. Older sets may not have the necessary jokers, but they may have extra flowers you can use for jokers. Make sure you know what you're buying. There are lots of old vintage American mahjong sets available, so you don't have to buy something else if that's what you want.

Also, some sellers sell "vintage style" sets that are reproductions of old style sets. If you're looking for a real vintage set, watch out for those, but if you just want a set you can use to play the game, a set that merely looks old might be a good idea.
