Staunton Chess Sets
Staunton is a well-known name in the world of chess. Howard Staunton was a British chess master, who was generally regarded as the best chess player in the world from 1843 to 1851. He was the main organizer of the first international chess tournament in England and a major chess commentator.
In 1849 Nathaniel Cook registered a chess set design, which was then manufactured by Jaques of London. Staunton advertised the set, recommending it because the pieces were easy to identify, stable and looked good. Staunton signed each box and received a royalty for his efforts. The design became very popular and has since been a standard among both professional and amateur chess players.
