Chess is the king of board games, at least in Western countries. Chess has been played in organized competitive fashion since the 16th century, so the traditions are strong. Chess professionals like Garry Kasparov, Bobby Fischer, Anatoly Karpov and others are well known figures, as are the computers that have faced them.

The attraction of chess is no surprise: the game is fairly easy to learn, playing a decent game takes only some practise, but to become a real master takes a lifetime of study. There are few games that can match the deepness of chess, yet even children can have fun playing the game.

There is plenty material available. Chess boards and pieces come in many styles, from decorative to simple, from cheap to very, very expensive.
