Checkers
Checkers (or draughts) is a classic board game. It's very old and played around the world in different variations. Many people consider the game as something suitable for children, but the game is actually rather demanding if played well.
Checkers is played on a 8 x 8 board like chess (international draughts is usually played on a larger 10 x 10 board). Players move their 12 pieces on the board diagonally. If you can jump over an opposing piece, that piece is captured. Players can make multiple jumps in a row, if there's space. The goal of the game is to capture all opposing pieces or make your opponent run out of legal moves.
Checkers has been solved: a computer program called Chinook is now able to win or draw the game, no matter how well the opponent plays. Of course, for most folks that doesn't mean a thing, because the solution is so complex that no human can follow it.
The world of checkers has its stars: Marion Tinsley may not be as well-known to outsiders as the chess pros, but no chess master has ever dominated the game like Tinsley dominated checkers.
