Backgammon is one of the oldest and most popular board games in the world. It is a game for two players: each player has a team of pieces, which are moved according to the roll of two dice. Players try to race their pieces through the board. Lonely opposing pieces can be captured, slowing the opponent down.

The game is often played for stakes and involves the use of a doubling cube, which has been called one of the major innovations in board games: a player may suggest doubling the stakes. Opponent must accept or resign. If the opponent accepts, she now has the possibility to double again.

It is easy to dismiss backgammon as a game of luck: after all, so much depends on the dice. However, playing against an experienced player will soon make these thoughts go away. A good player can first beat a less experienced player, then swap the die rolls and win with the losing rolls just as easily. Of course, with extremely lucky or unlucky rolls even a weak player can beat a master, but that's part of the excitement.

As is the case with many classic games, backgammon equipment comes in many flavours, from simple to extravagant, from heavy table sets to small travel boards.
