SPI
SPI or Simulations Publications, Inc. is one of the classic war game publishers. SPI was founded in 1969 and eventually went bankrupt in 1982. James F. Dunnigan found the company to take over publishing the war game magazine Strategy & Tactics. SPI was a game publisher, though, and from then on, each issue of Strategy & Tactics included a complete war game.
SPI published plenty of war games. Some of their more popular titles include Panzergruppe Guderian, Napoleon's Last Battles, Battle for Germany, Empires of the Middle Ages, Freedom in the Galaxy, Terrible Swift Sword and Wellington's Victory. They also published fantasy and science fiction games, with a new magazine called Ares that included a new sf or fantasy game in each issue.
The assets of SPI were acquired by TSR after SPI went bankrupt, and most of the staff went with Avalon Hill to form Victory Games. Decision Games has republished several SPI titles and is currently the publisher of Strategy & Tactics.
